Amravati is a municipal corporation in Maharashtra with a population of about 11 lakhs. It is located on the famous Mumbai-Kolkata National Highway number 6 and is well-connected to all parts of the country through rail connectivity. By the end of 2024, Amravati will have its own Airport for cargo and passenger services.
Amravati holds a significant place in mythology. It is also known as Indrapuri, as it is strongly believed that Amravati was the capital of Lord Indra. In the Mahabharata, there is an incident where Lord Krishna eloped with Rukmini from Amravati. Also Evidences of human settlement in Amravati comes with reference जैन तीर्थकर "ऋषभनाथ". Amravati was ruled by Hindu King "Devagiri (Yadav)" for many years.
Amravati was an epicenter of all freedom movements. Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, and many others participated in various agitations against the British in Amravati. It was an important center in Asia and had trade relations with Russia, China, and many other Asian countries since the 17th century. Amravati emerged as a center of cultural, educational, social, and political activities in the 18th century.
Amravati is a significant hub of cultural activities. Along with the world-renowned sports center, Hanuman Vyayam Prasarak Mandal, it represented India in the Berlin Olympics in 1936.
Recognizing the strong interest in education among the citizens of the Amravati region, the British established a college in Amravati in 1923.
Amravati is home to one of the best tiger reserves in the country, the Melghat Tiger Reserve. It also boasts the hill station Chikhaldara, surrounded by dense forests.
Amravati is known for its social contributions in various fields. Padma Shri Dr. Shivajirao Patwardhan, a true disciple of Mahatma Gandhi, established an ashram to eradicate the problems and consequences of leprosy. Rashtra Sant Tukdoji Maharaj, who advocated for rural development, traveled from place to place to raise awareness about sanitation, employment, and the inculcation of cultural and spiritual values.
Sant Gadge Baba, a social reformer, was a strong advocate for sanitation and cleanliness in society, and he worked to dispel superstitious beliefs. A university is named after him—Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University. Sant Gulabrao Maharaj was known as Pradnyachakshu Madhuradwaitacharya Gulabrao Maharaj. ‘Padnya’ means intelligence and eyes are called “chakshu” in Sanskrit language. He had many divine powers which included the ‘intellectual eyesight’.
The first agriculture minister of independent India, Dr. Punjabrao Deshmukh, also known as "Bhausaheb", established an educational institute named Shri Shivaji Shikshan Sansthan in 1952. His initiative opened the doors for many people from all corners of society to participate in the mainstream educational process.
Amravati is famous for its contributions to agriculture, education, social and political movements, and as a cultural hub.
